You Flip'n Forgot about Me... ✌🏽Really Great Ways to Engage Students with Flip

You Flip'n Forgot about Me... ✌🏽Really Great Ways to Engage Students with Flip

Remember that time we did the Flip (Formally Flipgrid) tech incentive? It was the hottest tool, and really cool and everyone signed up for it and we all, students and teachers, got burned out by it??

I bet that might be the last time you used it. Since then, they have rebranded, increased functionality, and are still offering a Flip'n (see what I did there?) cool platform that you can use to ignite engagement.

I recently watched a Ditch Summit Episode with the Merrills EDU - If you have never heard of them they are fantastic. They love Flip! Granted they work in a more primary setting, but two of the interACTIVE activities they presented I saw great value in and wanted to share!

#1 Let the Dice Decide

- Student Agency and choice = engagement. Using discussion questions in Flip and a simple die create a platform where students are responding to prompts, analyzing text, reflecting on learning, or reteaching a concept based off the number they roll on the die.

-If they roll a number twice, they can respond to a response within that question.

-Simple... Yet super effective

#2 Flip Stickers

Flip stickers are images with transparent backgrounds that can be added to your videos in Flip. Flip has fun stickers and emoji's built in, but to really make connections, sometimes you need to make your own. You can create these in any graphic platform like Canva or Adobe Express. If you are trying to use a photo and remove pieces and create spots of transparency Adobe Express was easier. If you are trying to use cute elements to make a character, Canva would be best. I'll show it in both.

Log into Adobe Express with your @ga.hiltoncsd.net account. Do not use the "Sign in with Google button". Manually sign up/in with email and then select "Company or School Account"

Create a new design I made one 8.5"x8.5"

There's a Badge For That: High-Flier Gamifier

New badge opportunity coming your way!

Are you a high-flier gamifier? Have you gamified a unit or your entire class? We saw a ton of awesome gamified units come out of the Gamification Captivation CTOD course. If you turned those gamification dreams into a reality and gamified a unit, all you have to do is submit evidence that you finished a gamified unit or have gamified your class and are ready to continue the process by adding mechanics and elements to the game based on your own and student reflections.

In order to qualify for High-Flier Gamifier Badge, you need to be on step five of the gamification process (shown on the left). Our CTOD class had everyone ending on step 3. Hopefully you have had enough time to test out your game in class, and if not, the badge will still be offered by the time you do.

To receive the badge, fill out this google form to show evidence of your gamified unit in action and your own reflection. If you successfully fill out each question in the form, you are a bona fide high-flier gamifier!

All badges in our "There's a Badge For That!" program can be used to win prizes, swag and bragging rights!

Funky with Functions in Algebra

New Flipgrid Rockstar Veronica Lyons whipped up a great Unit 2 Functions review task for students in Flipgrid. Students received cards with various vocabulary and directions from Unit 2. They shared their answers in their grids and some even made sweet examples. Veronica made a Mixtape to share out the top 12 responses to all three sets of Algebra. Check out her sweet Mixtape here:

Insert Learning From Your Dreams Into Your Classroom

12:25 PM 12
Insert Learning From Your Dreams Into Your Classroom
It is amazing how the universe has a tendency of putting you in the exact place you are supposed to be right at the exact time. That happened to me yesterday when I ran into Hilton High School's own Jason Cring and he was gracious enough to share with me an amazing new tool he discovered.

If you have been looking for a way to make websites interactive for your students, the same way you might with videos (using EdPuzzle), then Insert Learning will make all your dreams come true. Insert Learning is a chrome extension that allows you to take any article, website, or published google doc and allows you to add questions, prompts, additional comments, youtube videos or a self-recorded video. Insert Learning then integrated with google classroom and students can answer your questions, and complete the assignment, then it is a piece of cake for you to grade.

Once you have added your own prompts, assign to students by simply clicking "assign" and a link is created to your new assignment that you can put up on Google Classroom with one click! The first time, it will ask you to create classes, but all you have to do is select your Google Classroom classes.

What can the students do besides answer questions and discussions? If you expect students to annotate articles, it does that too! On the student side, they can highlight, add comments, and add sticky notes. When you go to the article, there is an icon in the upper left corner (a group of three people) and by clicking on that icon you can choose a student to view their own annotations.

Grading is pretty easy, as well. You can go to the article, click view all comments and grade directly from the list of comments, or you can grade from your IL homepage. Each teacher account has a dashboard where you can see all your assignments and do your grading. Just click on grading and select the assignment and you can grade right in the dashboard then export them to google classroom.

You might find it easier to grade those assignments through Insert Learning because you do not have to close out of one student's work to get to the next student's work. This feature might help you to create a more efficient workflow too! Since it works with Google Docs, you might find it easier to grade in Insert Learning in some situations.

Ideas, Ideas, Ideas:

- Have a class discussion on several topics throughout an article.
- Supplement a primary source with your own recorded explanation of it.
- Give a quiz with reading-based prompts.
- Take an article and add youtube clips to enhance the learning.
- Add video recordings of the article to help students who may need it based on their IEPs, or just to create a fragmented read aloud.
- Teaching students to annotate articles online? It does that too!

NOTE: You only get five assignments at a time, so if you plan to do more than five you would need to delete old ones.

Rock the Notes for Review with VideoNot.es

1:58 PM 0
Rock the Notes for Review with VideoNot.es
Remember as those review videos are being watched and rewatched and rewatched again, you and your students might find it useful to use VideoNot.es. Research is made easy with VideoNot.es after you sign in with your Google Drive. It is a very simplistic, bare-bones way of note-taking based on videos. Notes are taken with the time stamp of the video and can be useful in research, flipped-classrooms, inquiry learning and projects.

It is an extremely simple tool that you can use without any tutorial.

It is all on one webpage, and your notes will automatically live sync to your google drive into an automatically created doc in an automatically created folder.

Ideas, Ideas, Ideas

  • Taking notes on review videos
  • Research
  • Inquiry lessons
  • Noting examples of a theme
  • Video source analysis
  • Students note, comment, analyse or critique videos created by other students

Available on Chrome and Online (it'll work in Safari, but it is kind of a struggle)! Talk to your friendly local instructional technology teacher for more help.

Communication, Reflection and All Kinds of Assessment with ReCap

9:11 AM 0
Communication, Reflection and All Kinds of Assessment with ReCap
Quick Videos with ReCap.

Recap allows students to record video responses or create quick videos up to two minutes, and as short as fifteen seconds. This tool is ideal for using videos in non-project or mini-project assignments. Maybe you don't want students to dedicate too much time to editing or making videos more professional, but maybe you just want a quick raw video alternative. Recap is your solution.

ReCap is software by Swivl. We also have a number of Swivls that work with devices for recording if you want to kick it up an additional notch.

I will lead off with a few ideas (though I can't wait to hear yours)...

Ideas, Ideas, Ideas
  • Speaking conversations in LOTE
  • Opinion sharing
  • Book reviews
  • Quick skits recorded (history or English)
    • (As a history teacher, we used ReCap for students showing the changing of borders on video and to create propaganda commercials).
  • Phys Ed tutorials on mechanics/form
  • Explaining, showing, or tutoring in literally anything
  • Free feedback on books/stories/readings
  • Showing art techniques
  • Music performances
  • Read alouds and alongs

I Want In!

1. Logon to the ReCap website, Chrome App, or iOs App
2. Sign in as a teacher using your GA account (this will allow for easy Google Classroom integration)

3. Add a class (or classes, or individual sets)

4. Click "Add Recap"

Here you have the chance to add your questions. Type a topic title for your question(s) and type your questions or instructions in the box below.

ReCap will let you add up to ten questions in an assignment. You can also record instructions or an example by clicking record video. This technique might allow for a more conversational assignment or if you would like to give added instructions (or if you are a better speaker than typist)

6. Click next to set up the assignment. Here you can roll out your questions or instructions to the whole class, or just specific students. You can also adjust the maximum recording time (15s, 30s, 60s, or two minutes), and you can set a due date. You can also set up a feedback system if you'd like to acknowledge that you watched the videos.

Getting Students Signed Up Is Super Easy

When students go to the website, they sign up as a student using the automatic signup with their google accounts.

Regardless of what type of registration you have selected, there will be a join pin. Soon as students are given the join pin, they are in the class and ready to learn!

Grading

Grading is particularly easy, you can provide three levels of feedback on the site itself, but it is easy to watch the videos and grade them according to your own rubric. The assignment will come with a teacher panel that allows you to watch all the videos without clicking in and out of pages.

Just a quick link to a great article on ReCap if you are interested, from iPad Educators

The fine people from the FMS Tech Squad also put this video together regarding ReCap.

UPDATE: ReCap just unleashed a Beta 2.0 Version. The update includes the option to create "Journeys". Journeys multiple step ReCap videos that allows you to create videos, or pull videos from YouTube, Discovery, and several other sites.

In order to create a journey, click "Create Journey" next to the Add recap button and follow the steps. This allows you to record instructions or stick with typed prompts, and to add a few pages to the journey. Still super easy, now three times as powerful. You could do entire lessons through a Journey.

Please please please let your friendly local Instructional Tech Teacher know if you need any assistance with this tool, or if you would like to set up a co-teaching opportunity.
